Whom We Serve: Faith Based Organizations and Churches
Ram Cnaan in The Newer Deal: Social Work and Religion in Partnership found that 92 percent of congregations in the U.S. offer at least one social service and that congregations spend $36 billion annually on social service.

Drawing upon exploratory observations of congregations in five metropolitan U.S. cities, the Urban Institute in its 2002 study, Faith–Based Organizations Providing Employment and Training Services, found that very few of the congregations surveyed offer formal employment-related services.

Churches and faith-based organizations have always been at the forefront of providing solutions to our society’s social problems. Within these organizations are scores of volunteers, committed individuals, ready to change the world.

When the Jobs for Life way is implemented, over 80% of Jobs for Life graduates remain employed more than a year after Jobs for Life graduation. While poverty and unemployment have continued to rise in our country, churches and faith-based organizations have historically been absent in playing a significant role to combat these issues. It is not because congregations and organizations do not care, it is because they need a strategy that works. With a proven strategy and the tools needed to implement that strategy, churches and faith-based organizations hold the keys to breaking the long standing cycle of poverty and unemployment that continues to tear at the fabric of our society.

Jobs for Life is that proven strategy. Churches and faith-based organizations all over the country have taken the Jobs for Life strategy providing job training and support to low income individuals and have seen remarkable results. When the Jobs for Life way is implemented, over 80% of Jobs for Life graduates remain employed more than a year after Jobs for Life graduation.

But that result does not tell the entire story. It does not reveal the other effects that are realized through Jobs for Life:

  • Families and marriages are restored
  • Men return to their communities taking responsibility for their choices and actions
  • Children now see their parents working
  • Communities have hope
  • Church members and community volunteers become active in community outreach
  • Unlikely relationships are formed as people across race, denomination, and economic status join together in the fight against poverty and unemployment

Jobs for Life toolkits and ongoing training and support equip churches and faith based organizations with the strategy and tools needed to help individuals they serve find, obtain, and retain employment and build healthy lives.
